Tradition!

Today on @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we talk "tradition". I'm not talking about what u and urs do for holidays, etc.. I'm talking about traditions and apparent dogmas in music. These traditions can be great. They show the wealth of knowledge and experience that is music. Regardless of genre. However, IMO, these are merely guidelines for our artistic journey, not stopping points. We are indeed standing on the shoulders of giants! But the purpose is to see to the next horizon! Traditions in performance, technique, gear, etc. are not necessarily gospel. We need to evaluate them and see if they are limiting our evolution and creativity. Remember, these traditions were "new" at some point, and were not always accepted right away...many were initially scorned and dismissed. So, as always, we come to the "how" section. A caveat here...if a given practice or "tradition" is contingent upon getting or keeping a playing situation, it is ur responsibility to follow the guidelines provided.  Ok...look at the traditions/rules/guidelines/etc. associated with ur playing. Do they help you? Do they limit you? (This can be tricky as some may have specific benefits or are based in music fundamentals and IMO need to be given more "weight")If the answer is yes...keep on. If no...determine what "new tradition is needed. You may not throw the original one totally away, u may just alter it somehow. The key here is to stay grounded in the fundamentals,  but still look to the future. Evolution! Creativity! Purposefulness! These are the keys! The real traditions!
