Today on @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we talk application. More specifically, a response to what I have heard from countess students.."What am I gonna do with this?". First of all, if you are getting instruction from a reliable source (e.g. teacher, online course, books, etc.), concepts covered should be paired with a means of using them in your playing situation, or at least provide a path for growth. Second, TBH, as part of your progress, it is ultimately YOUR responsibility to apply these concepts. They should be looked at as springboards to your next level of playing ability, and you should try to see them and use them every time you pick up an instrument. Especially in the woodshed. And remember, not everything is going to be immediately applicable. Some things take time to "marinate" and assimilate. Ok, as usual, how? Let's break this up into two areas..concepts within your current playing situation and those outside, or more advanced. For the former, set aside part of your practice time to tear apart what u know and figure out out all the "whys" and how the concepts ur learning apply. We have covered this several times i in past talks, and it is invaluable IMO. I still do this in my own practice on a regular if not, daily basis. For the latter, u can do as above, but u need to go further. Find as may examples of a given concept as possible (maybe with the help of a teacher or colleague). The more ways it is shown, the better you will be able to grasp and apply it. Get together with like minded players and play using these more advanced concepts. Make it a session with pointed activities as well a a jam. Understand, that these may be outside your wheelhouse, but the more you use them, the more they will become your own. I use this approach with rock players wanting to delve into jazz. I tell them to get friends and bandmates to come over and play...bribe them with pizza, BBQ...whatever.. u dig? Start slow, be patient with each other. Keep it light and friendly. You will be amazed at your progress. As always, I invite your insights. #yamahamusicusa #makewaves #pirastro #glasserny #laklandbasses #sitstrings #tsunamicables #philjonesbass #uptonbassstringinstrumentcompany #basslessons #remotelessons
